We are a father (Dan) and daughter (Zoe) eating, cooking and blogging duo. We are sometimes joined by other daughter (Sophie) and Mom (Amy), mostly for the eating part.We decided to create this website for these burning (no pun intended) reasons:
To share our recipes, tips and tricks for a variety of delicious (at least we think so), healthy and easy-to-make homemade family meals that fit into a hectic contemporary lifestyle. (Not that we are busier than the next family…).
We love the family dinner! Despite our crazy schedules in Manhattan and New Jersey, busy school schedules, clubs and athletics, we eat (usually too much!) together on most weeknights.
In order to do this, we have some tried and true recipes / techniques that allow GOOD FOOD to be served at the dinner table with about 30 minutes of prep time. (Full disclosure: sometimes more than 30 minutes…sometimes less).
We have firmly rejected “freezer-phobia” and use the occasional weekend afternoon to cook mass quantities of dinners and freeze them for busy weeknights ahead.
Recently we have gone “sans-gluten” due to a daughter Zoe’s allergy. While the recipes that we will share are not exclusively gluten-free, most are or will have a GF variation!
Why “The Saturday List”?
Each Saturday morning, we write a list of the dinners for the week before we head out to do the weekly shopping. It has served as a way to organize our shopping, prepping and cooking for the week. (Actually, credit for this technique goes to my very organized oldest brother, Saul). While figuring out TSL (its obnoxious, but whatever), we browse the cooking mags, cook books and the internet looking for ideas. We also ask each other “do you have a yen for something we haven’t made in a while?” Sophie usually asks for artichoke pasta and Zoe for ribs; we will certainly cover these two in the recipe page.
We have noticed that when we use and follow TSL, we throw away less food and make fewer trips to the market…economical and sustainable benefits.
A typical TSL:
Monday:Artichoke Pasta
Tuesday:Shrimp Paella
Wednesday: Frittata (a midweek staple)
Thursday: Pulled Pork Tostadas
Friday:Steak (and a good red wine for mom and dad to take the edge off)
